Bi-Monthly Movie Review

For the second time in a row (as well as this year, or ever for that matter) I am going to talk about a movie (s) that I saw on Netflix as they both are brand new direct-to-Netflix features that I wouldn't have been able to see in the theaters.

Of course last time I talked about Pee wee, and being a Pee Wee fan, I just *had* to let you guys in on my thoughts of the film.

This time, I saw two movies on such opposite sides of the enjoyment spectrum that I felt you guys might enjoy (or stay away from) theses films.


First up is a little movie called Hush. When I read the premise (A deaf girl is being attacked in a cabin in the woods) I thought "Another one of those". However, something caught my eye as the movie was rated 4.5 (out of 5) stars. Upon watching the movie, I read that it had a 100% approval rating on rotten tomatoes. This movie deserves it. With such a small cast (barely 4 people on screen), you have to have great acting and believable characters. Not only did this movie delivered on that, but all the characters were smart. In just about every horror/suspense movie there is a point where someone does something stupid either to get killed or to keep the movie going so that they wont get killed. Not here. Everything made sense. The execution of the story was almost perfect as everything had a payoff at the end of the film and it was done in such a way that it was very natural.

"So, should I watch it?", you may ask.  The answer is a resounding "HELL YEAH!" Well, if you like a simple movie with great acting, smart believable characters and real suspense that is.

Next, a movie which I had seen not too long after watching "Hush". I watched #Horror. Yes, "Hashtag Horror". For the record, this film had a 1.5 star rating and a 50% approval rating on rotten tomatoes. Much like Hush, this film deserved it. Actually, IHMO I think this movie deserves less as the acting, "story", and plot were really bad. So bad in fact I can say that this movie would easily be the worst film I have seen in years. I did a little research into this production and I found out that a majority or the dialog was improvised by the many pre-teen stars of the film (and it shows). Maybe as an 30+ year old male I don't know how pre-teen girls talk but if they actually do talk like this, I will remain happy in my ignorant bliss. To be fair, there is a message about cyber-bullying in the film and maybe it does speak to a certain audience, but man, I hope to high heaven there is a better way to convey this message.

"So, should I watch it?" you may ask again. Well, if you want to hear pre-teen girls insult each other for an hour and then try to figure out the motivation for the killer (yes, it's a slasher flick of sorts) which is explained in one line of dialog at the very end of the movie, go right ahead and face that torture. Or, you can go watch "Hush" again.

Punisher, Elektra, Daredevil and Pee Wee.

Yep, you heard me right. Turns out that Friday, March 18th Netflix released not only season 2 of (one of the best TV shows I have seen in a loooong time) Daredevil, but also (a personal favorite of mine) a new Pee Wee Herman movie!

It has been ages (mostly due to the fact that there wasn't a new one made) since I have seen a new Pee Wee ("Big Top Pee Wee") movie and I had been looking forward to this ever since it was announced that Pee Wee was coming back to the big (albeit technically it's a Netflix sized) screen. Full disclosure, I am a fan of Mr. Herman (as a matter of fact, his creator Paul Rubens, is one of the top 5 people I have always wanted to meet) and have supported him throughout the years. However, I am still the same critical person you have come to know and love and I was not a fan of the aforementioned Big Top movie, so the fact that there was a new movie actually had me hopeful and excited to see what they would come up with. After all, his Broadway show was AWESOME (as was his TV show "Pee wee's Playhouse") and 50% of his movies were also equally awesome (Pee Wee's Big Adventure is a must see).

Sadly, I hate to say that not only was this movie not worth the wait, it wouldn't have been any good had it been made shortly after Big Top, as a matter of fact, if this movie had been made way back then, it (probably) would have been the end of Pee Wee for an even longer time. The movie was barely entertaining, not at all funny, and a pale "road trip movie" where the main character has to carry the movie and interact with many "zany" characters along the way as he desperately goes from point "A" to point "B" for plot reasons (think of his first movie and maybe.....the film "Bubble Boy").

"Should I see it?", you may be asking. Well, If you are a die-hard Pee Wee fan you (probably) have already seen it, and if not, go see The Big Adventure again and pretend it is updated with "today's" celebs.

Bi-monthly Movie Review: Deadpool

Yep, despite the fact that our show is still on hiatus, we still have content to offer. Our Youtube channel has new interviews from the Macabre faire film fest red carpet event, and our Facebook page is constantly being updated with news and information. That being said, it's time to post something here. A good old fashioned review of the new Marvel (by FOX) movie, "Deadpool".


For those of you who don't know, this will be a free flowing review so spoilers may be mentioned.

Now, I am not an "X-Men" fan, and an even less "X-Factor" fan so I pretty much was going into this movie with very little to no information as to who Deadpool is. Of course I have seen him in the "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" movie (which was a terrible film) and probably have seen him in maybe one or two comics (oh, and I did see him in the "Ultimate Spider-Man" animated series on Disney XD) so I had "some idea" who this guy was.

It's a very simple hero origin film, introduce characters, guy gets powers, guy beats bad guy (along the way he gets the girl, meets other super powered people, and "defines himself") and I think that is for the best, because the beauty of this particular movie is the dialog, the action and on top of everything the humor. Not just "comic book" humor (which there is a fair amount), but full blown "R" rated humor. Never had I laughed so consistently throughout a movie from start to finish. Speaking of "from start to finish", this movie was great all the way through from the first shot of the first scene right all the way up the last post credits scene, this was a truly funny, action-packed film.

So, should I go see it? Well, it is rated "R" for a reason, so if that isn't your thing, then by all means, this movie is not for you. Otherwise if you like a simple self-contained comic book movie (with little to no "seed planting" for the sequel or other comic-related features) with top notch writing, great character development, solid acting, great special effects and adult humor and action, then go see this movie right now. Show "Hollywood" that you can make a big-budget film that makes sense, is good, and is extremely entertaining.
